I've been there too. You’re not alone

Depression doesn’t just affect your thoughts — it affects your nervous system.

Depression can make your whole system feel heavy, stuck, tired, and persistently empty.
That’s why it can feel so hard to simply “think your way out of it.”

What’s Really Happening

Your nervous system is likely stuck in shutdown.

When the body experiences more stress than it can process, the nervous system may shift into a freeze state. This state is designed to protect you by slowing things down and conserving energy.

But when the nervous system becomes stuck in this state, it can lead to chronic fatigue, low motivation, and difficulty feeling joy or connection.

Is it your fault?

It’s not your fault.

Depression is not simply a matter of lacking motivation or having negative thoughts. It often reflects how your nervous system has adapted to stress or difficult experiences.

Our nervous system generally moves between three primary states:
  • Fight / Flight – anxiety, urgency, restlessness
  • Freeze – shutdown, numbness, lack of energy
  • Safety & Connection – calm, engagement, emotional presence

Depression often occurs when the nervous system remains stuck in the freeze state and struggles to return to safety and connection.

Somatic therapy focuses on working directly with the nervous system rather than only changing thoughts.

What This Work Looks Like

How Somatic Therapy May Look in Session

My approach is practical, grounded, and focused on helping your nervous system shift out of shutdown. Sessions often include three key elements:

Awareness of Sensations
Learning to notice the physical sensations connected to depression, such as heaviness in the body, fatigue, or emotional numbness. This awareness helps you understand how depression shows up in your nervous system.
Nervous System Regulation
Working gently with emotions and body sensations so the nervous system can begin shifting from shutdown into a state of calm and connection.
Mind–Body Integration
Helping your thoughts, emotions, and body responses begin working together so the changes become stable and lasting.
FUTURE IS YOURS

Yes. Depression is often connected to deeper emotional experiences that have not yet been fully processed.
