The body keeps the score — literally

Performance anxiety is a nervous system problem, not a mindset problem.

You can out-train a lot of things. You cannot out-train a system that reads competition as danger. When that happens, the tools that work everywhere else — more reps, more discipline, more visualisation — stop paying off.

What’s Really Happening

Your nervous system can’t tell competition from threat.

The same activation that makes you fast can also make you tight. Pre-competition arousal is meant to rise and then discharge — that is the cycle the body is built for.

When the cycle doesn’t complete — a bad crash, a serious injury, a season under pressure, a coach you could not say no to — the activation stays up. It shows up as a start line you dread, a skill that suddenly won’t fire, sleep that breaks the night before, or a body that keeps getting hurt in the same place.

That is not a lack of mental toughness. It is an unfinished stress response.

Is it your fault?

It’s not a toughness problem.

Athletes are trained to override signals, and often that is exactly the skill the sport requires. It is also why injury, fear and burnout tend to get pushed down rather than processed.

What athletes most often bring in:
  • Performance anxiety – the body tightens at the moment it needs to be loose
  • Return-to-play fear – the movement is medically cleared, the nervous system is not
  • Identity after sport – retirement, deselection, or an injury that ended it

Somatic therapy, EMDR and Brainspotting work with the stored charge rather than the self-talk, which is why they reach things that mental-skills work alone sometimes cannot.
This complements coaching, physio and sports psychology — it does not replace any of them.

What this work looks like

How Therapy for Athletes May Look in Session

Sessions are concrete and tied to what actually happens in training and competition:

Mapping the pattern
When does it show up — the week before, the warm-up, one specific movement? Finding where the system tips tells us what we are actually working with.
Processing the event underneath
Brainspotting suits sport particularly well: a crash, a fall or a specific failure often stays locked to a single moment. We process it so the memory stops driving the body.
Rebuilding the activation curve
Training your system to go up for effort and come back down afterwards, so recovery and sleep stop being the bottleneck.
FUTURE IS YOURS

Your Future Back in Your Body

Imagine warming up without bracing. Trusting a repaired knee. Sleeping the night before a race. The aim is not to make you calm — you need activation to compete. It is to make activation something that arrives when you ask for it and leaves when you are done.

Take the First Step!

If your training is on point and your performance is not, the gap is usually not in the programming.

Somatic therapy, EMDR and Brainspotting work with the part of the system that coaching cannot reach directly.
