Sleep, patience, drive, the ability to actually be present with the people you love — usually one of them gives out first. That isn’t a character flaw. That’s a nervous system that has been running on backup power for a long time.
Push through. Don’t make it a problem. Handle it. For a long time that strategy is genuinely effective — it gets men through deployments, deadlines, divorces and night shifts.
But suppression doesn’t delete a stress response, it stores it. The body stays braced, and the bracing eventually surfaces somewhere: a short fuse, a flat mood, a chest that never fully unclenches, a drink that quietly became a routine.
By the time most men book a first session, that strategy has been running for years.
You weren’t taught to override your inner life because you are weak. You were taught it because at some point it kept you functional — at work, on a team, at home, in a family that had no room for it.
None of these respond well to being talked out of. They respond to a nervous system that finally gets to finish what it never finished.
That is what somatic therapy, EMDR and Brainspotting work with directly — rather than asking you to explain yourself better.
My approach is practical and down-to-earth. Expect three things:
Imagine saying what is going on without rehearsing it first. Sleeping through the night. Being in the room with your partner or your kids and actually being there, not three problems away. This work does not make you softer or less capable. It gives you back the energy that holding everything down has been quietly costing you.
If you have been handling it alone long enough, that is reason enough to reach out.
Therapy here is not about being analysed or told what you should feel. It is about getting your system out of a gear it has been stuck in.
I offer a straightforward, non-judgmental space to work out what is going on and what would actually help.
